Yash’s much-anticipated Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups has opened well at the Indian box office. The Geetu Mohandas film, which was launched with great hype, earned ₹101.10 crore in India on its first day of release, according to the trade tracker Sacnilk.
Even though crossing the ₹100 crore mark is a great achievement on the first day, Toxic fell short of Yash’s previous blockbuster KGF Chapter 2. The 2022 action spectacle opened with around ₹116 crore net in India, setting an exceptionally high benchmark for the actor.
Toxic Day 1 Box Office Breakdown
Toxic collected a net collection of ₹101.10 crore on its first day with 24,579 shows in India. The film's India gross collection was worth ₹120.75 crore, and the overseas market contributed another ₹20 crore.
This takes the worldwide gross for Day 1 to around ₹140.75 crore.
The Hindi market was the biggest contributor to the film’s opening. The Hindi belt received around ₹55 crore, which clearly demonstrates the huge reach Yash has built from the success of the KGF franchise.
The Kannada version contributed approximately ₹23.30 crore and Telugu around ₹16 crore. Tamil contributed ₹5.50 crore, and Malayalam contributed ₹1.30 crore to the net on opening day.
The numbers underscore the changing market for Yash. Kannada cinema is still part of his theatrical strength, but the Hindi market has become a major contributor to his films following the unprecedented success of KGF Chapter 2.
Toxic Falls Short Of KGF Chapter 2
The comparison with KGF 2 was always going to be unavoidable. Yash became one of Indian cinema’s biggest pan-India stars with the success of the KGF franchise, and KGF Chapter 2 went on to post extraordinary theatrical numbers.
The first KGF film, released in 2018, opened to around ₹21.80 crore net across India. At that time, Yash’s popularity outside Karnataka was much lower than it became after the film developed a strong following across the country.
The sequel changed the equation completely. KGF Chapter 2 has so far collected around ₹1,215 crore worldwide (of which ₹1,000.85 crore gross from India and ₹214.15 crore from overseas markets). Its reported net collection in India was about ₹434.70 crore.
With such numbers behind him, expectations for Toxic were naturally enormous.
Can Toxic catch up during its Theatrical Run?
While Toxic has not reached the opening-day number of KGF Chapter 2, a ₹101.10 crore net opening is still a huge start. Now the film needs good word of mouth from the audience and good collections in the coming days to help transform the big opening into a long-running theatrical success.
The mixed reactions reported after the first day could play an important role in the film’s development. Big-budget pan-India films typically rely on weekend momentum and weekday hold after the initial fan-driven opening.
The success in the Hindi market will have a big impact on the performance in the Hindi market. With ₹55 crore coming from the Hindi belt alone on Day 1, even a moderate level of stability there could boost the movie’s box office strength.
