Yash’s “Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups” has attracted a lot of attention for its stylized action scenes, and the film’s elaborate circus-set “Vicious Fight” is one of its most talked-about combat parts. A new video shows how the sequence was constructed and Hollywood stunt coordinator and action choreographer JJ Perry talks about the physical choreography.
Instead of the fight being a traditional hand-to-hand competition, Perry and his team took the circus space as part of the action. The idea was to make the surroundings useful to the characters and incorporate the objects and spaces into the choreography. The visual aspects of the sequence were different and so also were the physical aspects of the choreography.
JJ Perry Explains His Approach To Action
In the BTS feature, Perry explains his philosophy of finding a “target of opportunity” in a place. It involves looking at the environment and finding things that can be part of a fight. Plates, knives, cooking equipment, a hot stove or boiling water could have a place in the choreography in restaurant kitchens, as well.
For *Toxic*, the same philosophy was applied on a much larger scale. The production's vast circus set offered the action team a lot of things to work with. Instead of treating the set as just background for the performers, choreography was built around its physical features.
Such an approach also required extensive preparation. Every movement had to be carefully rehearsed because the sequence involved actors, stunt performers, props, camera movements and the surrounding set working together. Even a spur of the moment moment in an action scene generally requires a lot of planning to ensure that performers can perform them safely and that they look convincing on screen.
Yash Earns High Praise From The Stunt Coordinator
Perry had very strong praise for Yash when speaking of the sequence. The stunt coordinator not only mentioned the actor’s physical skills but also his understanding of how action needs to be executed for the camera.
Perry praised Yash’s “mad swagger” and called him “one of the best.” His comments show that the actor’s contribution was more than memorising and performing a predetermined set of movements.
Perry said that Yash could quickly grasp the choreography and adapt to the needs of the sequence. The actor also had his own vision and it helped to make certain moments work visually. That partnership between the actor and stunt team helped define the final presentation of the fight.
The action style also contains elements of the highly choreographed and physically demanding combat of modern Hollywood action films. Perry’s comparison to the intensity and precision often seen in the *John Wick* franchise underlines the level of coordination needed for the sequence.
Geetu Mohandas And Yash Form A ‘Formidable Team’
Perry also praised Geetu Mohandas on handling the action department. The stunt coordinator praised Mohandas for giving the team freedom and making sure that the action was connected to her artistic vision for the film.
Mohandas and Yash are a “very formidable team,” Perry said, and the director and her lead actor are a creative partnership, too, she added. Their collaboration seems to have been important in determining the tone and presentation of the action in the film.
BTS footage shows us the preparation of the circus fight. Rehearsals, stunt coordination and repeated physical practice were made necessary before filming the sequence could go forward. The footage also provides a look at the circus setting before it was used to set up the action sequence there.
Toxic Brings Together A Large Ensemble
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, “Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups” stars Yash in lead and is populated with a large ensemble cast. Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth are among the actors involved in the project.
Its dramatic storytelling comes with a stylized visual presentation and big-scale action. The “Vicious Fight” is therefore a great example of the physical work that Yash and Perry and the rest of the stunt team do.
The newly released making-of material shows how much planning goes into an action sequence of this scale.
