Lee Cronin’s The Mummy to Stream on JioHotstar From September 17 in Four Languages
Another reason horror fans in India will have to mark their calendars is that Lee Cronin's The Mummy will be available on streaming on HBO Max on their JioHotstar channel on September 17. The highly anticipated horror film will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, giving audiences at all languages a chance to engage with the supernatural thriller from their homes.
The streaming announcement is accompanied with the chilling tagline, "The dead don't always rest in peace," which sets the tone for this film that takes the Mummy concept much darker and more disturbing than ever.
Directed and written by Lee Cronin, the director of Evil Dead Rise (who wrote and co-produced it), this movie has a new take on the Mummy mythology. While previous films in the franchise have been more about an ancient Egyptian adventure and action, Cronin’s film takes a relatively intimate, less violent, and more unsettling approach to horror.
The story focuses on the daughter of a journalist who inexplicably disappears in the desert. Eight years later, she returns to her family. What seems like a sort of emotional reunion at first soon turns into a horror of an awful nightmare as the supernatural forces start to emerge. The whole story is about family drama, mystery and psychological horror mixed with a supernatural menace.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy was released theatrically in 2026 and has since made its way to digital and streaming outlets. The movie is a horror and psychological thriller with a runtime of around two hours and fifteen minutes according to the current listings.
Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy and Natalie Grace are the stars, and Cronin brings his unique horror style to the film. Cronin also directed The Hole in the Ground and Evil Dead Rise and established a reputation for atmospheric horror and scary supernatural events.
The new film is also different from the previous Mummy films. It isn’t a continuation of the Brendan Fraser-led franchise, but a fresh take on the concept. The filmmakers have sought to make a darker version of the Mummy mythology; fear, family trauma and supernatural horror are the focus of those.
As an Indian audience, the availability in four languages will expand the streaming audience significantly for the film. English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu will also allow us to watch the movie in our language and therefore the streaming premiere on September 17 will be very much relevant for the film to be viewed in every country, region, state and culture.
The new international horror hit is also a new one for JioHotstar. With the increasing number of Hollywood films available on Indian streaming services, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy should appeal to those who missed it on the stage as well as horror fans looking to revisit its dark story again.
The film’s central premise— a child returning home after being missing for eight years only for the family reunion to become a nightmare— has a lot of mystery even before the supernatural elements are fully revealed. Cronin’s method of doing so is one of emotional tension with horror.
With the streaming date confirmed in the announcement of September 17, fans can now prepare for a dark supernatural experience without waiting to see a movie in a theatrical setting.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will stream on HBO Max on JioHotstar on September 17, available in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
