Urfi Javed Questions Mumbai Society’s 10 PM Visitor Rule: ‘You Cannot Stop People From Entering My House’
Urfi Javed has once again been in the middle of an online debate and this time she took down a visitor restriction for her housing society in Mumbai. She said that her camera crew and team members were physically stopped from entering the residential premises after 10 p.m. and she wonders if that is a legal requirement.
Urfi, who speaks her mind about social issues and personal issues, took to social media to complain about an unreasonable restriction for residents and guests. It says that the housing society has cited its by-laws to justify a rule that outsiders are not allowed to enter the premises after 10 pm unless the resident sends an email to the society in advance.
The problem came to a head when members of Urfi’s team attempted to enter the building, she said, when residents and security personnel stopped them and explained that the rules of the society did not allow visitors to enter after the specified time and no permission or communication from the apartment owner was given.

Urfi wrote about the restriction online and said she was shocked that she would have to request special approval before letting guests into her home. She said she, as a resident, has the right to invite people into her apartment if they are not involved in any unlawful activity.
Urfi also said she consulted a lawyer after the incident. She said the legal advice she got suggested that physically preventing guests from entering her house might be against the law. She therefore questioned the housing society's interpretation of its by-laws and how the rule was allegedly implemented.
Her frustration grew after she claimed that a security guard was stationed near the lifts to prevent her visitors from going upstairs. Urfi wonders why her guests were being physically stopped rather than any complaint being raised directly with her.
The actor was told that if she was violating a law or society rule, the authorities could take appropriate action against her, she said. Residents taking matters into their own hands and preventing her from getting people in her apartment, she said, was not a good thing.

Urfi also tagged Mumbai Police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation social media accounts and asked if the visitor restriction was legal. Her post was shared on the internet, with residents saying that there should be a balance between the rights of the individual and housing societies’ responsibility for security.
One social media user defended the society’s position by saying visitor restrictions could be put into place to keep residents safe and secure. Urfi replied by saying her guests were not criminals and that a resident should be allowed to let another person into their apartment.
Since then, there has been a wider discussion about housing society rules, visitor management and the extent to which residential associations can regulate guests entering a private home. Housing societies have security, parking, noise and access control rules but sometimes they clash when residents feel they are not allowed to use their own homes.

For now, nothing from Urfi Javed’s housing society about the incident is in place and the exact definition of the 10 pm visitor rule is unknown. It is thus not clear whether or not the restriction applies to all residents, if there are any such exemptions or what the society’s by-laws say about visitors after a certain time of day.
