Jana Nayagan is the much-anticipated Tamil superstar Vijay’s last film and it is a box office hit - it is up to ₹217.48 crore worldwide in four days as seen from the box office. Directed by H. Vinoth, it premiered on July 23, 2026, and has received a fantastic response from movies in India and overseas.

According to the latest trade figures, the movie has earned ₹124.75 crore net in India during its extended opening weekend. Tamil Nadu is the biggest beneficiary with the movie grossing nearly ₹84 crore in the state alone. The film also recorded the highest Day 4 collection ever for a Tamil film in Tamil Nadu, underlining Vijay’s lasting popularity among moviegoers.
Jana Nayagan has also been fantastic internationally. The film has been able to get around ₹71.50 crore from overseas markets (and it has already crossed ₹200 crore) in record time. Its strong collections worldwide have been helped by the fact that it has a large Tamil-speaking audience.
With this achievement, Vijay has now delivered his ninth film to cross the ₹200 crore worldwide gross mark, reportedly moving ahead of superstar Rajinikanth, who has eight films in the same club. Vijay is one of Indian cinema’s greatest box office stars.
The road to release was not without difficulties. Jana Nayagan faced several hurdles: an online content leak before release and production delays. But despite these difficulties, the film had the attention of large pre-release buzz on it due to Vijay’s announcement that it would be his last film and he would definitely transition to politics.
Critics have written mixed reviews for the film. While Vijay’s commanding screen presence, charismatic performance, and Anirudh Ravichander’s energetic background score and music have been praised, the screenplay and pacing could have been tighter in the second half. However, there has been enthusiastic audience interest and there have been packed theaters even on its first Monday (September 30).
It’s become not only a commercial sell-out but a sentimental farewell to Vijay’s acting career. The huge response is a testament to the huge fan base he enjoys (and he did not take a holiday to do so as he wanted to see the audience after his last movie) and his final film career before he got into public service.
As Jana Nayagan continues its successful theatrical run, trade officials are optimistic that the film will add to its global total in the coming days. At present, Vijay’s farewell movie is on the way to becoming one of the highest-grossing Tamil movies of 2026 (both in terms of sales, strong fan interest, and strong overseas collections) with solid occupancy and good fan sentiments.
